Getting to Know Your Neighborhood : Countryside in Westminster

IMG_1300

Westminster is a quintessential Colorado suburb northwest of Denver with its serene mountain views and beautiful neighborhood communities.  Countryside subdivision is a prime example in Westminster, Colorado stretching from 100th to 108th Avenues and Simms Street to Sheridan Blvd.

IMG_1295

Countryside is maintained by its citizens rather than an HOA providing more of a close knit community feel.  There are tons of outdoor activities to partake in year round.  The West View Recreation Center on W. 108th Avenue provides access to the Walnut Creek Trail which will eventually stretch three miles once completed. Map

Dog lovers will be pleased to find the Westminster Hills Off-leash Dog Park a short distance away.  In the summer months you can find residents at the local community pool on Oak Street or Christopher Fields where local youth baseball games are held.

Not only is Countryside close to community facilities, but is also conveniently located near many local businesses.  Ball Corporation calls W 108th Avenue home as well as Brocade Communications Systems.  Many technology and industrial parks in the area provide numbers of jobs for Westminster residents.

Team Building 2014 – “Where are we going exactly?

“Team building.  December 16th.  Bring your ‘A’ game!”  is what our team leader, Alan Strange, told me and the other members of our team about what we were about our upcoming team building activity.  That’s all.  Having only known Alan for a month, I had no idea what to expect.  Would I need a coat?  Is this going to be a physical challenge?  Where exactly are we going?  Being the newest member of The Strange Team, I decided to keep my questions to myself for the most part and follow the leader pretty much blindly.

The Strange Team, Alan, Doug, Mary and myself, were joined by our teammates from Summit Funding, Dustin and his assistant Tamsen, for lunch before we ventured to our mystery destination.  We all exchanged concerned and confused looks as Alan sat there giddy as a child and so very proud of his secret keeping abilities.  The team and I bounced ideas off each other throughout our meal, but Alan would not budge, other than no, we were not being left in a field to find our way back to the office.  We piled into our cars and drove to our destination (again only following Alan) which looked to be a plain looking industrial complex.   After walking down a path, we came upon windows with the banner “Denver Escape Room” plastered to them and skeptically entered.

Denver Escape Room

The place looked much like any office, albeit very quiet and bit dark.  The team was introduced to Denver Escape Room founder Brian Lacertosa and his business partner Russ Jenson.  Still having no idea what we were about to partake in, Russ walked us back to a large conference room where he asked us all questions about our team, how we worked together and how well we knew each other. The space had an almost eerie vibe to it, or it could have just been the feeling of the unknowing participants in the room.  Russ then explained that the Denver Escape Room was a scenario based puzzle game where we would work together in a staged room with a time limit to solve a mystery.  Russ and Brian would be watching without sound via a closed circuit camera where they would analyze our body language so that we could reconvene after the game and discuss how it applied to our business and us as a team.  The explanation was still vague as we entered the first room where we were instructed to find a hidden stop watch with only what was in the room and not lifting anything that a four year old couldn’t move.  The door closed and we got to work analyzing clues, while not having much direction at all and just each other to rely upon.

Now we don’t want to give away the secrets of the rooms that we escaped, but let’s just say we learned a lot and had a great time. We completed two rooms as a team, the first one we didn’t quite beat the clock, but after discussing and regrouping we succeeded in beating the time constraint for the next room.  The discussions we partook in afterwards were facilitated by Russ and opened up a lot of dialogue about our business and our strengths as a team.  All in all, the team building activity was a great success and we highly recommend you try to escape The Denver Escape room with your coworkers, friends, family or anyone you feel would be good in a challenge!  I for one am definitely looking forward to beginning the next year with this awesome team!  For more information about The Denver Escape Room, visit their website at http://denverescaperoom.com/  and also check out The Strange Team’s very own Doug and Tamsen featured in photos for the Denver Post’s Q and A with the owner: http://www.denverpost.com/yhbiz/ci_27195569/business-q-amp-denver-escape-room-northglenn

May All Your Christmases Be “Strange”!

It’s finally upon us!  The moment we’ve all been waiting for since Thanksgiving!  The tree is trimmed, loved ones are near, shopping is done (mostly) and the little ones are eagerly awaiting Santa’s arrival.  Tradition and the holiday season always go hand in hand.  Does your grandma make the same cookies every year or does Dad make everyone line up together for the yearly “Santa hat” family photo?  Maybe your uncle passing out into a food coma after dinner has become part of the celebration?  Whatever they are, they’re special to the individuals that celebrate them!  The Strange Team took a minute to share some of their favorite yearly traditions in the video below:

Not only does The Strange Team partake in some odd traditions,
check out these other “Strange” Christmas customs from all over:

  • Although Christmas isn’t usually celebrated in Japan, the Japanese have embraced KFC has the traditional holiday dinner on December 25th
  • Rather than tinsel and ornaments, folks in the Ukraine decorate their trees with spider webs (albeit fake ones)
  • Forget the Holiday ham, in Greenland locals indulge in Kiviak which are whole cooked birds feathers, beak, skin and all!
  • Instead of Santa in Italy they have La Befana who is a witch that flies on a broom to deliever candy and toys
  • In Venezuela church goers roller skate to mass in the early morning hours

We hope you all have a safe and wonderful holiday season!
