by SETH WILLIAMS on FEBRUARY 28, 2014

Strange Houses

Some architects don’t like to draw inside the lines and some homeowners don’t like to live like everyone else. Have you ever gotten bored with the same old “cookie-cutter” designs that home builders have been using for centuries on end?

If you’ve ever wanted to try something different with your next home or building project, perhaps these unique houses around the world will offer you some inspiration (and good luck getting approval from your Home Owners Association)…

The Oscars [watch parties] in Denver

The Oscars: Five Denver area watch parties

By Claire Delahorne
Hollywood’s biggest night is coming up on Sunday, and in honor of that most hallowed of cinematic traditions, we’ve compiled a list of the five best places to watch the Oscars in style.

1. Oscar Night America at the EXDO Event Center
As Robin Edwards writes in this week’s issue, “The night will include a red carpet, a predict-the-winners contest, and a photo booth with a real live Oscar (on loan from 1997 Best Documentary Short winner Donna Dewey) that you can hold while getting your picture taken. ‘It’s a gathering of folks who really love movies,’ says Denver Film Festival director Britta Erickson. ‘Those die-hard film lovers who have been watching these films all year long and are excited about who gets to win get to come together in a really glamorous way and celebrate like they do in Hollywood.’ They’ll toast with champagne, enjoy a fancy sit-down dinner, and participate in a silent auction during a live broadcast of the film industry’s biggest night. All proceeds go to the Denver Film Society, so you can gawk at the outrageous outfits and see who takes home those heavy golden statues knowing that you’re supporting another year of excellent film programming in Denver. ”

Where: EXDO Event Center, 1399 35th Street
Cost: Between $100 and $2,000, depending on the type of package you’d like.
Time: 5 p.m.

2. The Oscars at the Bug Theatre
The Bug Theatre is known as a center for alternative arts, but this Sunday it’s getting fancy and hosting the first annual Oscars at the Bug. Guests are encouraged to come “fashionably dressed in black tie and gowns and arrive in a limo Hollywood style or come dressed in casually dressed to enjoy the evening.”

Where: The The Bug Theatre at 3654 Navajo Street.
Cost: Free admission
Time: Doors open at 4:30 p.m.

3. Cinema Grill Oscar Watch Party
The Aurora Cinema Grill is a restaurant and movie theater all rolled into one. It will be showing the entire ceremony on its giant movie screen and serving its regular menu all night.

Where: The Aurora Cinema Grill 13682 East Alameda.
Cost: Entrance is free, or you can reserve seating with a $15 food/drink deposit.
Time: Doors open at 3:30 p.m.
4. Oscar watch party at Crave Dessert Bar and Lounge
Crave has been open just a few months, but the city’s already sweet on it. For tonight’s Oscar-watching party, it will be featuring some of the town’s favorite treats — including the twenty-layer cake and vanilla-dusted donuts — but the rest of the night is sure to please, too. With big TVs and bigger drink specials, what’s not to love?

Where: Crave at 891 14th Street.
Cost: Free
Time: 4 p.m.
5. The Kress Cinema and Lounge Annual Oscar Party
The Kress is located in Greeley, but this party could be worth the drive. A red-carpet entrance will prove you’ve arrived — and inside you’ll find an appetizer buffet, cash prizes for the best Oscar ballot and a decked0out lounge where you can watch the show.

Where:The Kress Cinema and Lounge, 817 8th Avenue, in Greeley
Cost: $20
Time: 5:30 p.m.

Homes of 2014 Oscar nominees

By Neal J. Leitereg of realtor.com

It’s almost Oscar Night, and we’re seeing stars on realtor.com.  No, not the 86th Academy Awards nominees themselves but the lavish real estate they own.

As a tribute to those responsible for the greatest achievements in filmmaking this past year, we are rolling out the red carpet for the homes of Hollywood’s biggest and brightest stars.

Leonardo DiCaprio (© realtor.com)

Leonardo DiCaprio

DiCaprio dazzled as the morally bankrupt stockbroker Jordan Belfort in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” but there is nothing corrupt or depraved about his living situation away from the silver screen.

The acclaimed actor has staked claim to numerous luxury homes in the Los Angelesarea, including a designer pad in the desiredBird Streets. He also owns a private islandlocale in Belize. However, his greatest trophy may have been his Malibu, Calif., compound, which the A-lister recently sold for a whopping $17.35 million.

Sandra Bullock (© realtor.com)

Sandra Bullock

Bullock rocketed back into Oscar contention with a powerful performance in “Gravity” that was as masterful as it was claustrophobic.

Back on Earth, however, the celebrated actress need not worry about confined spaces. Bullock shelled out a whopping $22.95 million for her stately home in Trousdale Estates in Beverly Hills, Calif.. Set on four acres, the home of America’s sweetheart comes with eight bedrooms, a lavish dining hall, a screening room and a gym, while spanning 8,100 square feet.

Matthew McConaughey (© Microsoft Corp.)

Matthew McConaughey

McConaughey threw his 10-gallon hat into the Oscar ring with a galvanizing performance in the drama “Dallas Buyers Club.” Off-screen, the leading man’s existence is best described as luxurious and carefree.

Just as he has in Hollywood, the veteran actor has made his mark in the real estate world with a number of high-profile purchases. In addition to his Malibu surfer’s compound, McConaughey returned to his Texas roots in 2012 with the purchase of an 11,000-square-foot mansion in Austin.

Meryl Streep (© realtor.com)

Meryl Streep

The most Oscar-nominated actor in history with 18 nods, Streep takes another trip down the red carpet for her part in “August: Osage County.”

While her acting career has touched upon numerous genres, the award-winning actress opted for something contemporary on the home front. In early 2013, Streep reportedly purchased an ultramodern compound in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Hills for $4.5 million. Have a look at the 1954 Research House by Architectural Products, as reimagined by Xorin Balbes.

Pharrell Williams

Following the success of “Despicable Me,” musician Williams returned to the booth to deliver another hit soundtrack for film’s sequel, and it’s easy to see why. The seven-time Grammy Award-winner stands to earn his first Academy honor after being nominated for his song “Happy” from “Despicable Me 2.”

Offscreen, Williams hangs his giant hat on this Oscar-worthy penthouse in Miami. Described by the artist as a giant fishbowl, the 9,000-square-foot luxury spread comes with private elevator access, a private screening room and world-class views of the South Beach skyline.

Trulia.com ranks Denver in Top 10
HOT Real Estate Markets to watch in 2014

MADELINE STONE

Trulia.com

As the housing recovery continues into 2014, some new real estate markets will start getting more attention.Real estate site Trulia has come up with a list of the top 10 housing markets to watch in 2014.

Jed Kolko, Trulia’s chief economist, told Business Insider that two main factors were considered when compiling the list.

“Markets that have faster job growth tend to have stronger housing,” Kolko said. “We looked at job growth over the past year, and also over a longer period of time. Housing markets don’t only depend on what’s happening today in the economy, but where it’s going in the longer term.”

Construction activity in 2013 was the other main consideration in compiling Trulia’s list.

“We looked at whether builders are betting on local markets, since builders build in markets where they think will be demand,” Kolko said.

The cities that made the list may be surprising to some, and there’s a reason for that. The survey excluded regions where homes tend to be overvalued, such as the coastal areas of California. They also didn’t consider areas where rates of foreclosure were high, as they are in parts of Florida.

Denver, CO

Job growth: 2.6%

Construction permits (relative to average for area since 1990): 94%

The Denver housing market is significantly healthier than it was at this time a year ago. 5,337 homes were under contract this September, compared to 4,457 in September 2012, and average selling prices are up 8% from a year ago.

“We are seeing homes sell for prices that exceed any time in our history,” Steve Blank of Fuller Sotheby’s International Realty said to Colorado’s Inside Real Estate News. “Denver is leading the way.”
