Cool Fireplace

A cool fireplace can really add character to a home. Did you know that in early America, the fireplace was a necessity and used very differently than it is today.  The fireplace was the hub of the home offering a place to cook and a place to stay warm. Today, the fireplace is used primarily as a decorative piece of the home that offers comfort in winter on those cold nights. Many people love a cool fireplace and consider it a necessity in their home. Let’s face it, we all love to watch a movie & drink hot cocoa next to a fireplace!

Early Days of Fireplaces

In the early days the fireplace was important in the home for the survival of the family. Due to lack of utilities, you would cook there, you would gather to stay warm, and in the winter months people would sleep around it to stay warm. Fireplaces were wide and deep to allow multiple pots inside for cooking. Since other means of heating the home became common, fireplaces began to get smaller and more decorative. As a result in the 1800’s mantles were added and eventually fireplaces were no longer needed yet still highly desired.

The Fireplace Today

Today, a cool fireplace is still a must in a home. According to the National Association of Realtors 46% of home buyers would pay more for a home with at least one fireplace. Furthermore, in some areas a fireplace can boost a home’s value by over $10,000. Fireplaces today are a little different. Our fireplaces have gotten smaller, run off gas, and turn on using a switch.  Homes still have wood burning fireplaces, but they are getting harder to find. Double sided fireplaces add a wow factor and many fireplaces have stunning mantles! Fireplaces are a great addition to any home and require very little maintenance, we recommend having them serviced annually to make sure they are clean and running property.
